How To Make Studying With Friends Productive
I love studying with my friends. However there are times when it makes me work harder, andddd there are times when it makes me hardly work at all. That’s why it’s important to learn how to properly study with friends.
Do Your Friends Motivate You?
It’s also important to note who you’re studying with. I have friends that I love studying with. We motivate each other and work well alongside each other. But I also have friends that I know I could get nothing done with if I were sitting next to them. And there’s nothing wrong with having those friends! But if you’re trying to get work done, be cautious of who you’re surrounding yourself with at the time.
Choose A Good Study Environment
If you and your friends are studying in a quiet, productive place, it’s more likely that you will also be quiet and motivated. So, if you’re determined to get a lot done but worried that you’ll end up chatting a lot, go to a quiet place so you feel more pressure to also be quiet.
Set Aside Scheduled Breaks
An effective way to get things done but also spend time with friends is to set a timer for the amount of time you want to spend doing work. For example, 30 minutes. And then a timer for your study break. For example, ten minutes. During the study break, you can talk and just hang out for a bit, maybe enjoy a snack too. Setting aside these breaks makes it so that you can distinguish when it’s time to work and when it’s time to hang out.
Limit Distractions
Limiting distractions is important when you’re studying with friends and also when you’re simply studying by yourself. However, if you’re with a friend, you could make it a game to see who could stay off their phone the longest. For me, when I go on my phone I tend to get sucked in and stay on it for longer than planned, so this is a super important tip!
Be Prepared With Goals
It’s also effective to have personal goals for the study session going into it and make sure your friends have personal goals too. That way if everyone has a task or a few tasks that they want to complete going into the study session, you are more likely to push each other to accomplish those tasks.
“Study Sessions” Are Fine Too!
I put study sessions in quotations here because what I really mean is that if you and your friends aren’t pressed to get things done, it can be fun to have a casual study session and slack off a little bit. Some of my favorite times in college have been just hanging out in the library with my friends. It’s almost like a study session because our laptops are open, but we’re not getting any work done.
If you’re anything like me and just like to have company with you, studying with friends is the perfect thing. Knowing how to do it effectively is important though. I hope this post helped shed some light on how to make studying with friends more effective and that you implement some of them into your study sessions!

I’m picturing you and your friends with one of those chess clocks where you smash the buttons as the talking and studying starts and stops.
Such important information.
